Justice for Ben Ramos
0 Comment
Four years ago, Benjamin Ramos was killed.
He was shot dead on 6 November 2018 outside a store in Kabankalan, Negros Island, by two men wearing motorcycle hoods. This modus operandi, far from being an isolated incident, is a trend in the Philippines when it comes to the killing of development workers red-tagged by the government.
Ben Ramos, a lawyer by training, was also a development worker, founder and director of ASTM partner “Paguida-et sa Kauswagan” Development Group (PDG, Inc.) in the Philippines, which was established in 1987. Its objective is to contribute to the development of rural communities in the province of Negros Occidental. As a dedicated people’s lawyer, Ben Ramos extended his pro bono services to the rural poor in their struggle to assert their human rights and their rights to land and food throughout the island of Negros. These are small farmers, landless agricultural workers and marginal fisherfolk.
Because of his work, Ben Ramos, had been threatened several times in the past. He was well aware that his life and the lives of those working with him were in danger. Nevertheless, his commitment remained stronger than the death threats. At the time of his assassination, he was assisting the National Federation of Sugar Cane Workers following the murder of 9 of its members by armed men in the town of Sagay in October. Sadly, this horrible crime, like so many others committed against human rights defenders, has not been investigated and remains unpunished.
On the 4th anniversary of his death, ASTM and its members wish to condemn this crime once again, as well as those committed against other innocent human rights defenders such as Father Marcelito Paez, Zara Alvarez or Randall Echanis. We would like to reiterate our commitment to stand with the Filipino people in their struggle for land and freedom, against all forms of oppression. We would also like to send a message of love and hope to his friends and family: Ben Ramos has touched the lives of thousands of peoples fighting for justice, therefore he will never be forgotten as his actions will live in our hearts forever.
Justice for Ben Ramos !
