In pursuit of justice: join a discussion with Filipino human rights defenders @ Cafe Konrad | Luxembourg | District de Luxembourg | Luxembourg

Since President Rodrigo Duterte came to power in 2016, the human rights situation in the Philippines has deteriorated dramatically. His appalling human rights record has now far surpassed those of previous administrations, including that of the notorious dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

During the first two year of his presidency, over 20 000 people were killed in total impunity in the anti-drug war launched by his administration. Human rights defenders and civil society organisations are constantly harassed and threatened, many have been killed.

Victims of human rights violations under the Duterte regime are now seeking justice. What actions are being taken by civil society in the Philippines to hold those responsible for these acts accountable? What is the role of human rights defenders? What can European countries such as Luxembourg do to support them?

The NGO Action Solidarité Tiers Monde invites you to discuss these questions with two eminent human rights defenders from the Philippines. Cristina Palabay is the Secretary General of the internationally renowned human rights group Karapatan, an alliance of organisations working to promote and protect human rights in the Philippines. John Milton Lozande is the Secretary General of the Federation of Agricultural Workers in the Philippines. Both working in extremely difficult conditions, they will testify about the courage of the Filipino people in their pursuit of justice.
