DESCRIPTION:Come and meet Bharati Chaturvedi\, director and founder of CHIN
TAN\, and Jai Prakash Choudhary\, secretary of the waste recycler associat
ion Safai Sena.\n\nFor the past six years ASTM has supported the work of C
HINTAN in promoting socially and environmentally more sustainable policies
in India. Like most of the developing world\, India is being transformed
by both globalization and urbanization. Many urban Indians have become fer
vent consumers in the last two decades\, leading to a quantum leap in the
demand for resources and intense pressure on the environment. Already toda
y\, India produces 42 million tonnes of waste annually\, a fact that is in
separably connected to the work of the informal sector\, which includes th
e 1% of an average city’s population who recycle waste and reduce pressure
on the environment. Their work helps clean up the cities by recycling app
roximately 20% of the waste generated\, thus contributing considerably to
the reduction of greenhouse gases. And yet\, recyclers lack formal recogni
tion\, equal rights\, secure and safe livelihoods and dignity. What’s more
\, their only source of income is constantly threatened by privatization.
\n\nManaging waste\, ensuring sustainable consumption and a healthy enviro
nment for every citizen and ensuring just\, decent and safe working condit
ions for waste handlers are\, therefore\, urgent challenges adressed by AS
TM’s partner CHINTAN in New Delhi.\nPresentation and discussion in English
