 he work of CHINTAN in promoting socially and environmentally more sustaina
 ble policies in India. Like most of the developing world\, India is being 
 transformed by both globalization and urbanization. Many urban Indians hav
 e become fervent consumers in the last two decades\, leading to a quantum 
 leap in the demand for resources and intense pressure on the environment. 
 Already today\, India produces 42 million tonnes of waste annually\, a fac
 t that is inseparably connected to the work of the informal sector\, which
  includes the 1% of an average city’s population who recycle waste and red
 uce pressure on the environment. Their work helps clean up the cities by r
 ecycling approximately 20% of the waste generated\, thus contributing cons
 iderably to the reduction of greenhouse gases. And yet\, recyclers lack fo
 rmal recognition\, equal rights\, secure and safe livelihoods and dignity.
  What’s more\, their only source of income is constantly threatened by pri
